Overthinking?

You need to read this.

Do you ever feel like your thoughts are moving like a hamster on a wheel, going round and round but getting nowhere?

That's overthinking.

Our brains are amazing problem-solving machines.

But sometimes, they work a little too hard.

We overthink because:

  • We're afraid of making mistakes

  • We desire to be in control

  • We're worried about what others think

  • We're trying to predict the future

  • We're unable to admit defeat or loss

Does all of that sound familiar?

Let's take a look on how to overcome overthinking.

Break free

Set a timer

Give yourself a set amount of time to think about a problem.

When the timer goes off, it's time to move on or to execute on the problem.

This helps you to avoid getting stuck in repeating thought loops.

Remember, time management is life management.

Get moving

When your mind is racing, you better get your body moving.

Go for a walk, run or dance.

Physical activity can help you to remove any clutter that keeps your thoughts stuck in a loop.

Talk it out

Sometimes, our thoughts make more sense when we say them out loud.

Talk to a friend or family member about what's on your mind.

People who you value might offer a new perspective you hadn't considered before.

Write it out

Put your thoughts on paper.

This can help you see them with more clarity and often makes them less overwhelming to deal with.

Find peace in the bigger picture

Life is full of uncertainty.

The only thing that's constant and we're certain of is change.

Instead of trying to think our way to perfection, we can learn to embrace the unknown.

Consider this:

  • Mistakes are necessary for us to grow

  • We can't please everyone, and that's fine

  • Our worth isn't determined by what others think of us

It's normal

Overthinking is a habit, and like any habit, it can be changed.

It takes practice and a lot of patience, but with time, we can learn to quiet our busy minds.

Remember:

Our thoughts are like clouds in the sky, we can notice them without getting caught up in the storm.
